red Pine

Written by Ty Defoe

Screenplay Finalist of the 2020 the Cordillera International Film Festival, narrative short Red Pine began development of at the Institute of American Indian Arts. This film short is a deeply personal narrative about the complexities of relating to culture after taking a deep dive into using ancient wisdom and teachings as a means of transformation.  The process for making this film involves galvanizing collaborators together to tell this intricately detailed story about indigiqueerness and two-spirit identity. In particular, for Transmaculine individuals, what does it mean to transition from one gender to the next with an indigneous lens, what does it mean to transcend gender and still have to live in a western heteronormative society? When returning home for their father’s funeral, Red Pine becomes a story of self discovery and reconnecting with family both physically and spiritually. Ultimately it will become a bridge between the cross section of communities to dismantle any myths about gender expression connected to two-spirit identity.
