ISHKODE

Written and Performed by Ty Defoe

Interweaving Indigenous oral storytelling traditions and contemporary multimedia performance, Ishkode follows the story of Firekeeper as they journey back to the fire with a greater understanding of themselves and the migration of their Anishinaabe ancestors across Turtle Island.

The lesson of the Seventh Fire is the story of the original people. On the journey across Turtle Island, the Anishinaabe stopped seven times and received seven prophecies. We are now in the time of the Eighth Fire. Society must choose between two paths: one is green and lush, but it is difficult to traverse; the other is clear and simple, but the earth is scorched and will not grow. This is the knowledge that Firekeeper must keep alive.
